Natural Selection

Image
I believe that "survival of the good enough" is more of an accurate description of natural selection than "survival of the fittest". Natural selection is how an organism can survive in its environment because they have learned to adapt to the environment. This leads to producing more offspring. This also means that they mutate to be more successful in surviving in the environment. In the image that I have drawn are two butterflies one that is purple and one that is brown. The brown one has adapted to the environment to survive because it can blend into the background of things better than the purple one.

Convergence, Natural Selection, 'Survival of the Fittest'

An example from "Improbable Densinites" for convergent evolution is sea snakes and beaked sea snakes. These snakes are in different parts of the world ranging from Southwest Asia to Australia. It was discovered that Australian sea snakes and the beaked sea snakes are more related to each other just like the Asian sea snakes and beaked sea snakes are to each other. Convergent Evolution is when distance-related organisms develop similar traits to one another to survive in similar environments. These snakes are examples of convergence evolution because these two organisms are from similar environments and share similar features. In the way of natural selection the two organisms started out as the same however one evolve a bit more and had to survive in a similar environment with some changes. One could have been eaten more than the other so one had to go to a different part of the ocean to be able to survive.

Mutation and the Tree of Life

Image
Mutations are very crucial when it comes to evolution. A mutation is when the DNA is altered which can change all things in life. This plant is called a Starflower. It first did not start out as a star-shaped plant however to protect itself from getting eaten so much it created thorn-type peddles and red spots. This mutation was beneficial for the starflower but not for some animals that would eat it because it caused them to get sick. Since not all animals can get sick from the plant this influences the trajectory of how many animals can survive by eating the Starflower and how many nutrients are they receiving.

Survival of the Fittest myth

I think the myth " Survival of the fittest " is a very interesting myth that most people would believe that it is true. It interests me at first because you would think that only the strong will survive yet the strong and the weak survive. If there wasn't any weak to prey on then there would not be any strong either and there will always be something that is stronger or weaker than the other.  This is in Powerpoint that I created from pictures I found but I could not get PowerPoint to upload on here.  It is a little different because humans are not going to fight a pug for survival but we do learn to coexist with each other as well as love each other. In the picture are my pug Maggie and my brother Taylor and I.
